About this experience

The carved wooden balconies on Al-Balad's coral houses are called rawashin, and the handful of workshops still cutting them are the reason the restoration works. Spend an afternoon at a bench with a carpenter who repairs them for a living. You learn the geometry behind the lattice, why the joints are cut dry with no glue, and then cut and assemble a small panel of your own on traditional hand tools. Takes about three hours and you leave with the panel. No woodworking experience required — the first hour is spent getting comfortable with the tools.
