About this experience
Jeddah's largest mosque, completed in 1987 to a design by Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, is a masterclass in modern Islamic architecture built with traditional forms. A tall brick dome crowns the prayer hall, while a slender minaret, arched arcades and a shaded central courtyard echo Mamluk and Hijazi building traditions. The mosque won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989. Covering roughly 9,700 square metres in Al-Sharafiyah, it remains a busy neighbourhood mosque, and its calm courtyard and finely detailed doors and lanterns reward an unhurried look.
