About this experience
Bab Makkah is the eastern gate of old Jeddah, the point where caravans and pilgrims once set out on the road to Makkah. The present gate, a reconstruction of the historic one, shows a broad coral-stone facade with three pointed arches and crenellated towers at the end of Souq Al-Alawi. Around it spreads Souq Bab Makkah, a busy open-air market of spices, dates, nuts, henna, perfumes and household goods that has served the city for generations. It is a lively place to begin or end a walk through Al-Balad. Photo credits: Richard Mortel from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (CC BY 2.0), Tahir mq (CC BY-SA 4.0) via Wikimedia Commons.
